Miller To Deliver New City Centre Development

Miller Construction has been appointed to deliver a new city centre development in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The first phase of the Stephenson Quarter project, construction contract valued at £44m, will include a landmark 251 bed four-star hotel and conference centre, a multi-use building providing 35,000 sq. ft. of Grade A offices and a 357 space multi-storey car park.

The transformation of the area will connect the cultural quayside to the city centre and forms part of a wider regeneration programme. The creation of the vibrant living, working and cultural areas aims to stimulate the regional economy.

The green light for the first phase of the project is the culmination of extensive public and private collaboration between Newcastle City Council, North East Local Enterprise Partnership, developers Silverlink, Aviva, Royal Bank of Scotland and Miller Construction.

Ian Jubb, Regional Managing Director, Miller Construction, said: "We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver another major landmark project in the heart of Newcastle.

"The Stephenson Quarter project will help to bring new life to the city centre and support the overall vision to regenerate the city centre whilst retaining the heritage and proud history of the area. We look forward to delivering these prestigious projects to the highest standards whilst keeping the city centre ‘open for business’ during the construction phases."

David Clouston, Managing Director of Silverlink added: "We have been working on this scheme for over 10 years and it has been very challenging at times. I am therefore indebted to the work of our outstanding professional team who will complement the skill and expertise of Miller Construction. We recognise that physical regeneration is one of the keys to job creation and the well-being of a city and it requires a first-class team to deliver that."

The works on the first phase of the Stephenson Quarter project is due to begin in May and is expected to complete in May 2015. The project will be delivered on a 10-acre site adjacent to the Central Railway Station where Miller Construction has also been recently appointed to undertake a £8.6 million transformation also starting in May.
