Kier Construction has started work on the conversion of a Grade II listed warehouse on Greenland Street into Liverpool’s first University Technical College (UTC).

Formerly known as the Contemporary Urban Centre, the £4.5m project will transform the historic building into a Life Sciences and Studio School for approximately 1,300 14 to 19-year-old students and will be operated by North Liverpool Academy.

Internally the UTC will retain many of the building's key features with Liverpool-based design team Shed KM and Kier incorporating innovation labs, a life sciences wing and a health & social care centre within the college building, which was originally completed in 1898.

Managing director of Kier Construction's northern business, Gary Wintsersgill, commented: "The new UTC is a really exciting project for Kier to be involved in as it’s a first for the city and brings one of the area's most historic buildings back into use to educate and train the young people of Liverpool."
