Work has started to transform a homeless hostel in Liverpool.

Mildmay House is a supported housing project, run by charity organisation Chapter 1, which houses 50 homeless men.

This £4.5 million project will be jointly funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Chapter 1.

The building will be totally redesigned with the help of residents, local people and contractors and will be a mix of self-contained flats, individual en-suite rooms and purpose-built accommodation to meet the needs of residents.

Chapter 1, Operations Director, Caroline Hansen, said: "This exciting investment in Liverpool will ensure we can continue to help people who are homeless. They deserve more than just a bed. We can offer them a better future.

"The refurbishment will offer training and employment for our residents, and also benefit the wider community in Merseyside. We are encouraging local suppliers to submit tenders, and are committed to prompt payment to make it easier for smaller enterprises to be involved."
