Work to construct the Bexhill – Hastings Link Road can now start after receiving final approval from Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.
Under the scheme East Sussex County Council will construct a 3.5 mile (6km) single carriageway road between the A259 in Bexhill and the B2092 Queensway in Hastings. As well as improving accessibility between the two towns, the road will allow the development of North East Bexhill – the largest single development site in the area.
Mr McLoughlin said: "This scheme will kick start economic regeneration in a deprived area of the south east and tackle problems of accessibility between the towns of Bexhill and Hastings. It will open up 52,000 sqm of land in north east Bexhill for business development and housing and creating new jobs. The £56.85 million we are putting into this scheme shows that the coalition government is serious about investing in the infrastructure the country needs to drive economic growth."
The scheme will deliver:
• a 3.5 mile (5.6km) single carriageway road between the A259 in Bexhill and the B2092 Queensway in Hastings
• 3 new signal-controlled junctions incorporating bus priority measures
• provision of a green way for cycling, walking and horse riding
The scheme was given provisional funding approval in March 2012. The announcement means that work can now start on the construction with the project scheduled to complete in 2015.
