Homeowners in three Barnsley wards have until the end of March to sign up for energy saving work under the Green Deal Pioneer Places Scheme.

Homeowners in the Central, Old Town and Kingstone wards of Barnsley are reminded they have just over two weeks to sign up for home energy efficiency measures, at no up-front cost, under the Green Deal Pioneer Places scheme.

Funding of £109,000 through the scheme has been awarded to Barnsley to kickstart the Green Deal. This is a national scheme that enables the installation of home energy efficiency measures, such as solid wall insulation, cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and new boilers. To date more than 30 households in Barnsley have expressed an interest in signing up.

Barnsley Council is working with three partners to deliver the programme of works – Groundwork Dearne Valley, Keepmoat Regeneration and Sheffield University.

The bulk of the cost of the works will be met from the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) – a government requirement that big energy companies fund works that help to reduce the amount of carbon produced through heating homes. The balance of the cost of the works will be funded through a Green Deal loan, with the loan repayments met from the resultant savings on energy bills.
