Thousands Apply For EDF Energy's Apprenticeship Programme

Record numbers of applicants are hoping to join EDF Energy's prestigious four-year apprenticeship programme, which includes two years training at a Royal Naval base and two at a nuclear power station.

More than 2000 youngsters from across the country have applied for this year’s 52 places on the EDF Energy Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship.

The first two years are spent training at HMS Sultan in Gosport, near Portsmouth, home of the Defence School of Marine Engineering and the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival School.

This year, 2038 people applied to join the programme, regarded as one of the best in the energy industry.

Ian Williams, EDF Energy programme manager, said: "The number of applicants this year has exceeded our expectations. Hopefuls have just been through our assessment centre and the final decisions are just weeks away.

"Word is obviously travelling fast about what an excellent career path our apprenticeship programme offers and the world-class training they receive.

"National Apprenticeship Week is a very important initiative. Many leaders within the industry have started as apprentices and moved through the ranks to reach some very lofty positions. Our apprentices receive great support and quality training, gaining vital skills and a fantastic and comprehensive introduction to the industry."

After completing training at HMS Sultan, the apprentices head to their base power stations in England and Scotland, for the final two years.
