Plans have been unveiled for the redevelopment of Don Valley Stadium, the BBC has reported.

The £40m project will see the stadium transformed into a "sports and wellbeing park".

The venue is being demolished as part of council budget plans.

With the new plans, which include venues for rugby league and union teams, as well as basketball, gymnastics and snooker, athletics will move to Woodbourn Road Stadium.

A new National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine and a technical college would also be built on the site.

Former Sports Minister Richard Caborn said the project would be the "biggest Olympic legacy project outside of London."

Details as to how the development will be funded have not been disclosed, but it is understood no council funding would be available for the project.

On 1st March, it was confirmed Don Valley would close in September as part of budget cuts worth 50m.

Don Valley Stadium opened in 1991 for the World Student Games in Sheffield at a cost of £29m.
