Kier has been awarded the contract to redevelop the Grade II listed Midland Goods Shed and East Handyside Canopy at King's Cross for supermarket chain Waitrose.
The Waitrose scheme, which is the latest project to come to fruition at the 67-acre King’s Cross development, will create a 29,000sq ft food and wine store at ground floor level and 25,000sq ft of speculative office space.
The Midland Goods Shed was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1850 and served as a temporary passenger terminal while the current King’s Cross station was being built.
In addition to the store, which will create up to 170 new jobs, the Waitrose development will include a 3,000sq ft innovative cookery school, which will provide designated free sessions for schools and priority groups in the local area, as well as paid courses.
Subject to planning and funding, construction is anticipated to start in late 2013 with the supermarket and cookery school due to open in spring 2015.
