Derbyshire County Council has made a good start towards meeting a target of cutting its carbon emissions.

The council made a commitment to cut its CO2 emissions by 25 per cent between 2011 and 2015.

In the first year levels have been reduced by over 5,000 tonnes (6.5 per cent).

If similar reductions are made every year then the 2015 target will be met.

Councillor John Allsop, cabinet member for recycling and technology, said: "With energy bills rising it's important we consider ways of making savings.

"As our carbon emissions have reduced, so too has our energy bill.

"The work also shows our firm commitment to the environment."
