Balfour Beatty Construction has been selected to perform demolition and new construction work for Charlotte School of Law's new uptown campus.
As the general contractor on the project, Balfour Beatty Construction's work will include 10 floors in the 27-story, Class A Charlotte Plaza building, representing a total of 195,976 square feet. This new campus will not only expand the size of the school’s facilities, which are currently located on Charlotte’s west side, but also allow students easier access to Mecklenburg County and federal courts, law firms and businesses in the centre city area.
Balfour Beatty Construction is performing demolition and upfit of retail spaces on the first and second floors of the Charlotte Plaza building as well as the complete demolition and build-out of the fourth through eleventh floors. The new facilities will house all of the law school’s students and facilities, including classrooms with tiered seating, office and administrative support spaces, mock courtrooms with jury deliberation rooms and a state-of-the-art law library on the fourth and fifth floors. An impressive monumental stair will connect the law library and serve as both a visual and functional transition between the floors.
"The new facilities will create an ideal learning environment for students and staff while unifying the campus in a convenient, urban setting," said Pat Dean, president of Balfour Beatty Construction's Carolinas division. "Charlotte School of Law is an important resource for our community and the legal profession. We are honoured to serve as a trusted advisor for one of our city’s premier educational institutions."
Founded in 2006, Charlotte School of Law is an ABA accredited, private institution that is part of the InfiLaw System of independent, community based law schools. Charlotte School of Law is committed to serving the underserved, creating practice ready lawyers and to student outcomes.
Construction is already underway on the new campus.
