Union Welcomes Debate In Public Sector Infrastructure

Construction union UCATT have welcomed Labour’s decision to hold a Commons debate on the lack of investment in public sector infrastructure projects.

The motion argues that investment in infrastructure projects is essential to the economy’s recovery and that work is yet to start on many of the major projects that have been promised in the National Infrastructure Plan.

The motion also highlights the fact that the Conservative-led Government has spent £12.8 billion less in capital investments than the previous Labour Government had planned. The motion goes on to argue that infrastructure projects should be brought forward to kick start the economy and this should including major investment in affordable housing.

Steve Murphy, General Secretary of UCATT, said: "His debate shows that there is an alternative to the construction industry being starved of funding. Investment in infrastructure, social and council housing is good for workers, good for the construction industry and good for the economy.

"The Government is the construction industry's largest client it had a morale duty to ensure that investment continued especially at a time when the private sector was unable to pick up the slack. The present Government’s decision to cut construction funding has directly led to thousands of construction workers losing their jobs."
