Gas Training at Kier showed its commitment to providing ex-MOD staff with training and qualifications in gas engineering by taking part in a virtual training event run by the Career Transition Partnership (CTP).
The event, the first of its kind for the CTP, was a fully interactive, 3D environment that allowed personnel preparing to leave the armed forces to meet and interact with staff from Gas Training at Kier in an efficient, effective and environmentally friendly manner. The only requirement was a high-speed internet connection.
Over 800 participants logged into the event and 87 visited the Gas Training at Kier virtual booth with a view to joining a gas training course.
Kier regional director, Mike Furze, said: "Gas Training at Kier is committed to helping people from all backgrounds develop a career in gas engineering. People in the armed forces show tremendous courage by putting their lives at risk for our country and we are proud to be able to help them on their return.
"When unemployment levels across the country show people are finding it hard to find roles, we are pleased to offer training opportunities for people in the communities in which we work."
Former serviceman Paul Timothy said: "When I left the forces I really wanted to develop a career in the construction sector, and my placement with Kier helped me learn the skills I needed as well as gain on the job experience. In the past I found companies reluctant to take on and commit to trainees but Kier has a unique approach.
"When a vacancy arose within Kier I applied and was successful. I am extremely grateful to have been offered such a fantastic opportunity."
