Improvement works have started on one of Carlisle’s oldest buildings.

The Old Town Hall, a two storey Grade I listed building, is undergoing some major repair works between January and May 2013.

Carlisle City Council have appointed local building firm, Cubby Construction, to undertake the restoration. The City Council owns and manages the historic building and will be financing the majority of the £490,200 project, with support from English Heritage.

As well as roof repairs, the Old Town Hall improvement scheme includes: works to external walls; refurbishment and replacement of some windows; internal works to the tourist information centre, including plaster and timber repairs; and upgrade of thermal insulation; a modified reception counter for customers with disabilities; new carpets and decoration.

The ground floor of the building is let to businesses, all of which will remain open during the construction period. These include Alternative, Costa Coffee, Peter Fletcher Jewellers, Routledges The Bakers and Hodgsons Newsagents.

Carlisle's Tourist Information Centre, which took up the first floor of the Old Town Hall has been temporarily relocated to The Lodge, a building at the entrance area to Carlisle Cathedral, on Castle Street until Monday 22 April 2013.
