Southwark Council started work to upgrade and improve traffic signals and safety around the junctions of Peckham Rye with East Dulwich Road and Nunhead Lane.

The improvements which are scheduled to complete on 29 February 2013, will see a temporary four way traffic system introduced with a phased crossing for pedestrians during the construction.

The work, part of a major upgrade of traffic signals and footway improvements, will include additional filter lights and electromagnetic traffic sensors being installed on the carriageway to improve the flow of traffic around the junctions.

A number of complementary improvements for pedestrians are also planned.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for Transport, Environment, and Recycling, said: "We are pleased to be starting this work which will significantly improve road safety around this area.

"We are aware that the four-way traffic lights could cause some degree of traffic disruption during construction but have made every effort to minimise this and will work with the contractor to expedite the works where possible."
