First Minister Unveils £4m Blaenau Ffestiniog Regeneration Scheme

First Minister Carwyn Jones has set out his hopes of a vibrant economic future for Blaenau Ffestiniog as he officially unveiled the £4 million regeneration of the town centre.

The EU backed project aims to boost the local economy and create job opportunities. It has been funded with more than £3 million from the European Regional Development Fund and £1 million from the Welsh Government, with additional financial support from the Council and the private sector.

Delivered in partnership with the Welsh Government, Blaenau Ymlaen and Gwynedd County Council, the scheme has seen improvements to 12 shop fronts and commercial properties, attracting several new businesses to the town including the newly refurbished Ty Gorsaf Hotel - formerly the Queens Hotel - as well as gift shop Parti4 and undertakers G Williams and Sons. An enterprise stimulus package, providing advice and support, has also helped secure new business.

Other improvements include new signage which has been placed throughout the centre as well as new street furniture and public art in keeping with the rich history, heritage and culture of the town.

The First Minister said: "This is a highly ambitious project and a great example of team work, with the Welsh Government, Gwynedd Council and the EU working together to improve the town centre to attract investment and help boost the local economy. The scheme is about maximising the economic potential of Blaenau Ffestiniog and creating opportunities for local businesses and people.

"I hope the regeneration improves the experiences of those coming into the town and also create a sense of optimism and renewed pride. Blaenau Ffestiniog has a long, proud history and I want the town to have a bright, vibrant future."
