Pupils laid the final bricks to complete the external building works at the new £24m Stanground Academy buildings in Peterborough on 10 December.

Zak Jupp and Lewis McPartlin, who previously carried out work experience on the site where they received tuition and training in bricklaying, laid the final bricks to finish the block work.

Now that the shell of the buildings is complete Kier can move onto the next stage, which includes plastering, decorating, laying vinyl and fitting fixed furniture such as benches for the science classrooms.

Ged Rae, acting principal, said: "Completing the external brickwork is a key milestone in the development of our academy buildings.

"The new accommodation will transform the learning experience for our pupils and support our ambition to ensure results improve dramatically in 2013."

The new buildings, which are being funded by Peterborough City Council, will include specialist departments for science, technology and the arts, as well as a new 25m swimming pool.
