BAM Construction in the Midlands has been selected as preferred bidder for a £12 million redevelopment of East Midlands Airport.

The contractor, which has offices in Derby, will build a new security hall and queuing space for the airport terminal, which will increase the size of the terminal by 1375 square metres and remodel the retail area in the departure lounge.

BAM has begun enabling works, but the main construction phase takes place between January and December 2013. The contractor will carry out the major works while the airport continues operating as normal.

BAM, which is just completing delivery of Derby Council's new Civic Offices, places great emphasis on trying to secure local labour and materials for its projects.

Contracts Manager Jon Kiteley said: "We have several local companies from Nottingham and Derbyshire in prospect, and these are likely to cover steelwork, waste management, and mechanical and electrical aspects of the build. Several of our own team live within the East Midlands."
