London's South Bank has undergone a major transformation in recent years and in the middle of this vibrant, bustling neighbourhood is Moonraker Point, Mansell's latest student accommodation development for the UNITE Group.
Completed by London Major Works, the £34 million development provides 674 high quality bed spaces. 127 of these are in the Delta building, a stunning 9-storey triangular building and the remainder are in the main 11-storey building which also accommodates commercial units.
The exteriors are a mix of brickwork and aluminium cladding which has all been constructed using a unitised cladding system. This avoided the need for scaffolding and so reduced the risk of working at height and logistic issues. All of the bathrooms were manufactured off site and delivered as pods bringing safety, quality and programme benefits.
The project recycled close to 100% of demolition material and other environmental features include rainwater harvesting, green and brown roofs and a CHP unit. The commercial units will achieve a BREEAM "Excellent" rating. Pumping away of groundwater to sewers was minimised by using a large soak away system.
The site is located opposite Southwark Crown Court and shares a boundary with the London Fire Brigade training centre but excellent working relationships were developed with both and also with other local residents and businesses.
