Hundreds of ageing litter bins across the borough will be getting replaced to provide more space for people throwing rubbish away.
To help keep the streets clean of litter Chorley Council is going to be installing 300 new metal litter bins from Eccleston to Euxton and Withnell to Wheelton.
Work has already started in Chorley town centre and bins will be replaced and installed on the main routes into Chorley and the towns and villages in November and December.
Councillor Terry Brown, who is overseeing the bin replacement project at Chorley Council, said: "Streets in the borough are generally clean and tidy but we want more people to be responsible and either put their litter in a bin or take it home.
"As part of our Making it Happen campaign we are taking the lead and doing our bit by replacing the ageing litter bins with ones that are bigger and can take more rubbish and in return we want people to dispose of litter responsibly.
"It's also a chance to remind pet owners that dog waste can be put in the general litter bins so I hope it does lead to a reduction in the amount of dog muck we see littering the streets."
The council will also be working with parish councils to identify bins that need replacing and any new requirements.
The work will see the small post-mounted litter bins and some of the red dog waste bins removed and replaced with the much bigger 120 litre ones.
