A purpose-built library is planned for Talbot Street, on a site currently occupied by our adult care service.
The building will be demolished to make way for the new library which will provide improved services for customers including more books, a new children's and teenager's library and more computers with free access to the internet.
The draft proposal also includes landscaped outside space to give children and adults a place to sit and read.
Derbyshire County Council have earmarked £2 million for the project and are in the process of submitting proposals for the 575m2, single-storey building to county council planners.
Derbyshire County Council leader and cabinet member for culture Councillor Andrew Lewer said he was pleased we had finally identified a suitable site.
"A new library is long overdue for Glossop and this purpose-built facility will provide a much-improved service for the people of the town and surrounding area.
"It has been a long search but it will be worth it to give the people of Glossop the best possible library service."
Proposals for the new library were drawn up by the authority's own architects and include an activity room for local groups. It is also hoped a Changing Places toilet could be included.
