Builder John Wood, of Violet Way, Yaxley, was fined £500 and ordered to pay £350 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge after pleading guilty at Peterborough Magistrates' Court to fly tipping waste.

The court heard that Mr Wood had flytipped waste – builders' rubble, bricks and concrete - in October, 2011, onto land owned by Cross Key Homes, an area that had recently had a building on it demolished, known as Saxon Court in Stanground.

The council received information that the waste had come from a particular address in Coneygree Road where construction work had recently been carried out, the court was told.

Mr Wood originally denied he had flytipped the waste and entered a not guilty plea at his first court appearance, which he altered to guilty before his trial began when he admitted that he had deposited the waste without a waste management permit and contrary to section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Councillor Peter Hiller, Peterborough City Council Cabinet Member for Housing, Neighbourhoods and Planning, said: "It is a priority for us here at the city council to do all we can to deter people from dumping their rubbish and we will take any evidence of incidents regarding flytipping extremely seriously."
