Kier Construction has topped out a new 12-laboratory science block at The Downs School in Newbury.

Kier and its appointed architect Nightingale Associates are building the much needed facilities for West Berkshire Council. The £4.37 million design & build project is part of a larger scheme to improve secondary schools in the area.

Sixth formers Natalie Richardson and Tom Jarrett laid the last few bricks to mark the occasion, witnessed by eight other pupils who had performed exceptionally well in science over the last year. Kier also presented the school with a commemorative trowel.

Irene Neill, West Berkshire's executive councillor for education, said: "Topping out is always a significant point. It highlights the effort that has been put in and the upcoming benefits of the improvements. It goes without saying that 12 new science labs will provide an incredible boost for the school."

The new building is scheduled to be completed in spring 2013.
