Lovell has started work on a new mixed-tenure development for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council which will provide brand-new bungalows for low-cost and open market sale on an important site in the town's history.
The development, Coventry Gardens in Merthyr Vale, will incorporate a permanent memorial recognising that its location was formerly a playground built with money raised by Coventry City Council after the Aberfan disaster in 1966 in which 116 children and 28 adults were killed. Citizens of Coventry raised £4,000 to fund the play area.
The land is being redeveloped as part of the ongoing regeneration of the area by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, with the new housing set to commemorate the generous contribution by the people of Coventry through the development’s name and a plaque that will be a key focal point of the scheme.
Lovell, which was chosen to build the new homes through a competitive tendering process, will build 11 two-bedroom bungalows: five for low-cost sale through Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and six properties that will be for open market sale by Lovell. The low-cost sale bungalows are expected to be used to relocate residents from Taff and Crescent streets, Merthyr Tydfil, where there have been serious flooding issues.
As part of its commitment to creating a lasting legacy in the areas where the company works, Lovell will be planning a number of community projects and will be working with the local school. The £1 million housing development is set to be completed in Spring 2013.
Councillor Chris Barry, Cabinet Member of Customer Services (Business & Regulatory Services), says: "I welcome this development as part of the continuing regeneration of the County Borough. This Authority recognises the historical importance of this site and therefore I am pleased that the generosity of the people of Coventry has been recognised both by the inclusion of a plaque, and by the naming of the development. I am sure that this exciting scheme will be of benefit to the community of Aberfan."
