Havells-Sylvania Travels The Distance

The award-winning Concord Beacon Muse from Havells-Sylvania has helped create an energy-saving, high performance lighting display at the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow.

Used to showcase the various displays in the Modern Street area, eighty two Beacon Muse fittings were chosen for their long life, low energy and optical flexibility. The new scheme provides dynamic accent lighting and helps transport visitors back in time.

Zaha Hadid's first public building to open in the UK, the Glasgow Riverside Transport Museum sits proudly as a flagship of the city's Clyde Waterfront regeneration. With its unique shape and demanding presence, it is no surprise the lighting design was not up for compromise. DHA Design was responsible for lighting the exhibits in the museum. Their brief was to design a predominantly ground-mounted display system that would provide suitable highlights and contrast to the exhibits and collections.

The 'Modern Street' offers a set of closed display areas which exhibit various transport items and model street amenities including a subway, MOT garage, cinema, toys shop and cycle shop. These areas had a track system available overhead and DHA chose the Concord Beacon Muse for its on-site flexibility. The clever adjustable zoom option system offers a wide flood 65˚ beam angle which can be tightened to a 10˚ spot without the need for additional lenses or reflectors.

DHA used the versatile spotlight to selectively highlight the displays – illuminating cars, bicycles, miniature models, car parts and artworks. Conservation levels applied to all the exhibits so protecting the artwork from light exposure damage was essential. The low UV from the LED source and an on-board dimmer potentiometer from the Beacon Muse meant it was able to comfortably handle all situations.

The Concord Beacon Muse is an award-winning spotlight which provides all the benefits of LED technology, no UV / IR radiation, 50,000 hours life at 70% luminous flux, maintenance free applications and a considerable reduction in energy consumption over traditional light sources such as halogen. Muse incorporates a discrete on board dimmer providing control from 100% to 0%, and also collective track dimming options, essential requirements for museums, galleries and high end retail applications. The contemporary all die-cast aluminium design is supplied with a turned single piece aluminium front helix with engraved beam angles for simple and easy adjustment.
