Building Work Begins On Homes In Milton Keynes

Young people with disabilities were guests of honour on site to witness the start of works on their brand new home last week.

The purpose built accommodation is being built in Bletchley to house eight young people aged 10 -19 with a wide range of learning and physical disabilities and associated difficulties.

The new home has been designed following feedback from consultation with the young people, their parents and carers last year. It will have a domestic home feel, with a large lounge, kitchen/diner with patio area, eight en-suite bedrooms, a sensory room, as well as a staff office and bedroom.

The accommodation replaces the council's nearby home for children which currently provides 24 hour dedicated care for six young people, but which no longer meets the required high quality standards for residential care.

The home's manager, Estea Fourie said: "A domestic style home like this provides the opportunity to support local children and young people to remain living in Milton Keynes and be part of the community. The young people continue to have contact with their parents so it is important that it feels like a home from home for them when they visit too.

"The home is in the ideal area for our current and future young residents. It is close to all the facilities that they currently use – for example the medical centre, shops, park and bus stops. We can’t wait to move in!"

The project is due to be completed in February next year. It is being built by Borras Construction, as part of Milton Keynes Council's Construction Framework.
