The Costain-Skanska Joint Venture (jv) handling the Crossrail C405 Paddington Station contract has had its approach to the prevention of accidents and ill health recognised with a Gold Award in this year's RoSPA Awards.

The contract involves excavating a huge box measuring 260 metres long by 28 wide and 25 deep for the new Crossrail station alongside the existing terminus. Work began in February and the contract includes creating the main concourse, platforms and fit-out.

The RoSPA Awards recognise commitment to accident and ill health prevention and look not only at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager, commented: "We congratulate Costain-Skanska on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line."
