National Trust Morden Hall Park Scoops Award

Construction News Image
National Trust Morden Hall Park has won an award in the 2012 Green Apple Built Environment and Architectural Heritage Awards.

Morden Hall Park picked up the Silver Award for Best Small Retrofit, for its newly renovated stable yard which opened to the public in November 2011. Supported by a £990,000 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant, with additional support from the European Union, the Victorian stable yard is now one of the most energy efficient historic buildings in the country. It provides an interactive centre for learning about sustainable green living and new energy-saving products, as well as a community exhibition space, National Trust offices, craft stalls, a café and eco-toilets. Some of the project’s energy efficient aspects include the most up to date solar technology, a wood burning stove using wood sourced sustainably from the park, an air source heat pump, rainwater harvesting tanks, waterless urinals and different types of energy efficient glazing.

Morden Hall Park was recognised and rewarded at a prestigious award ceremony held at the East Wintergardens, Canary Wharf, London on Monday 25 June 2012.

The Green Apple Awards are hailed as Europe’s longest running environmental awards. The Built Environment and Architectural Heritage Awards are the leading international awards honoring excellence in sustainable construction, design and innovation of products and architectural preservation. The Awards recognise and reward best practice in both the private and public sectors. The 16th Annual Green Apple Awards received nearly 150 entries from Britain and around the globe.

“We are so pleased to receive a Green Apple Award. Incorporating energy-saving materials and devices into modern buildings is now common practice, but older buildings present many different challenges,” says Morden Hall Park Property Manager, Zoë Colbeck. “This pioneering project has given us a unique opportunity to restore our 19th century building in a way that meets the environmental challenges of the 21st century. The stable yard is a source of information and inspiration to anyone who has an old home or building to renovate or maintain."

Mark Taylor, who was in charge of Crofton’s engineering work on the project said: “It was great to be involved with such a ground breaking project. Its sustainability will ensure that the building is at the heart of the park’s operation for many years to come.”

The Green Apple has been awarded to Morden Hall Park only a month after the stable yard received the prestigious Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) London Award for Design & Innovation.
