Mansell has won a £1.6 million contract to construct a new Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Maggie's North East will care for anyone affected by cancer and will lie within the North of England Cancer Network – covering a population of approximately 2.1 million people. The region encompasses an area that runs from the east coast across to Cumbria and down to the River Tees.

The bespoke building comprises a concrete frame structure which will be covered in natural landscaping embankments and weathered steel panels. Designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, the building will partly enclose a courtyard and offer two wings of accommodation.

A central library will incorporate stairs up to a mezzanine level, covered by an angled curved roof covered in photovoltaic panels. The mezzanine will lead out onto a flat landscaped roof, screened by planting.

Vibrant landscaping will surround the centre which is expected to achieve a BREEAM "Excellent" rating.

Work starts on site in June 2012 and is expected to complete early in 2013.
