Parsons Brinckerhoff Designing Replacement Project At Burlington Canal Lift Bridge

Parsons Brinckerhoff has been awarded a contract to design the replacement of the controls, drives, and overhead cables at the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, which spans the Burlington Canal, connecting Burlington and Hamilton at the western shore of Lake Ontario.

The project entails replacement of controls, drives and overhead cables for the bridge. Additionally, the span drive machinery will be evaluated for partial replacements and retrofits. Parsons Brinckerhoff is responsible for carrying out the engineering design, contract administration, resident site services, commissioning, and post-construction services for the project. Also included are all necessary structural engineering and other related services for the completion of the work.

Tendering for construction is scheduled to begin in May 2013, with completion in March 2015.

The Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, opened in 1962, is a steel truss vertical lift movable bridge originally designed to carry two lanes of vehicular traffic and one railway track for the Hamilton-Northwestern Railway across the Burlington Canal. The railway track was removed and the structure was modified to accommodate a widened roadway in 1982. The bridge now carries four lanes of vehicular traffic. The bridge structure consists of a lift span across the canal along with one tower span and one approach span at each end of the bridge. The lift span is 117 meters (380 feet) long and 20 meters (65 feet) wide with a vertical lift of 33.5 meters (110 feet) to accommodate commercial shipping passage through the Burlington Canal. There is a sidewalk on the west side of the bridge for pedestrians.
