BBC Newsround presenter, Joe Tidy, has been to Hinkley Point in Somerset to film a special edition of the popular children’s programme focussing on nuclear power.
The programme is part of a series on energy in the UK and is due to be broadcast on Tuesday 12 June.
The presenter was shown around by Brian Webber, an EDF Energy technical expert who has worked on all three sites – the A station now being decommissioned, the operational B station and the Hinkley Point C project.
Brian said: "It was great to welcome Newsround to Hinkley and to show them what we do here to produce the electricity for the TVs, laptops, games consoles and other devices that today’s children all seem to rely on. From the school visits we have here I know that children are keen to know more about where electricity comes from and also how low carbon energy can help combat climate change."
EDF Energy's 'Insight' programme for Somerset schools has already engaged with 10,000 local students, highlighting opportunities for science lessons to be turned into long-term careers at the planned new power station.
Lorraine Mather, EDF Energy’s Local Education Co-ordinator, added: "It's exciting to think that the future workforce of Hinkley Point C is sitting in today’s classrooms. Our 'Inspire' programme is about engaging with students, sparking their imaginations and lifting their aspirations. That’s something we can only achieve in collaboration with local schools and colleges."
