Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the Joint Venture between VINCI Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine, has been appointed on the £13.7 million project by East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust (the Trust) for a new emergency department at Lister Hospital in Stevenage.
The first part of the project is a new extension to the existing Accident and Emergency department within the existing hospital grounds. In addition IHP will undertake remodelling of the existing day surgery unit within the hospital to house a new fracture clinic, as well as refurbishing the current A&E department, paediatrics and the MRI scanning facilities which will be extended to include a recovery area. A remodelled Ultrasound facility is also included in the scheme.
Alan Kondys, IHP Framework Director, commented on the project: "IHP is thrilled to have been appointed to deliver this project to develop a vital service for the local community in Hertfordshire. Our expertise in healthcare delivery will ensure we can work closely with the Trust to complete the works to the highest possible standard, taking into account the Trust's healthcare objectives and the sensitivities involved in building in a live hospital environment."
The new emergency department, and additional works, comes as part of a major £75 million four phase redevelopment of Lister Hospital that, on completion, will see the hospital become the primary centre of emergency treatment and inpatient services for the east and north of Hertfordshire. The phased development involves 11 other major projects, including a new £20 million ward block and a £20 million extension to current operating theatres and a new endoscopy unit, which are currently awaiting approval.
