Mansell To Build Luxury Development On The English Riviera

Developers Havard Tisdale and their construction partners Mansell are to commence a high-profile project worth £11.5 million to construct a six-storey mixed-use development on the English Riviera at Abbey Crescent, Torquay. The architects are Kay Elliott.

Building on the site of the former Palm Court Hotel opposite the waterfront at the ‘gateway into Torquay’, the landmark scheme comprises 14 holiday apartments, 12 private luxury residential apartments, two penthouse residential suites and four new high quality restaurants together with car parking and improvements to surrounding highways and public spaces.

The project’s design has been influenced by the modernist style of early 20th century British seaside architecture. The simple linear form, curved balconies and glass balustrading maximise the expansive sea views and create a contemporary interpretation of the “Riviera style”.

Located in a conservation area adjacent to sensitive historic developments, the height and mass of the building respond to its surroundings and its proportions have been carefully balanced to take account of the key views of the building, especially on the approach to the harbour.

Construction is scheduled to start on site at the end of June 2012 and take approximately 18 months to complete.
