The St Aldhelm's Academy Trust has announced Kier Construction as the selected panel member for the £9.8m renewal and refurbishment project at St Aldhelm’s Academy in Poole, Dorset.
Comprising new build and refurbishment elements, the project aims to transform the existing, outdated 1930s’ school buildings into modern, purpose-built accommodation that provides the facilities and environment required to deliver a 21st century education to the local young people.
Kier is working closely with architects Jestico + Whiles and the client to develop design proposals for the new building which will be able to accommodate up to 900 students with an additional 200-strong sixth form provision.
The design provides a new two-storey school building creating 4,600sq m of educational space including specific areas for dance, drama, art and science, a theatre and four ‘schools’ where young people will learn in small family communities. Two of the existing buildings will be renewed to form a hub for work-based learning, such as hair and beauty, construction, car maintenance and forestry skills.
New landscaping, including entrance plazas, outdoor theatre, outdoor gym, a central courtyard, a woodland strip and learning gardens will add greenery and unite the buildings. Community facilities will include a cafe, enterprise shop, hair and beauty services, and outdoor areas. Cycle and car parking, safety, security and accessibility will be improved under the proposals.
Kier Construction director, Martin Orr, commented: "Kier is delighted to have been selected to take the St Aldhelm’s Academy Trust’s renewal plans forward. Kier has an extensive portfolio of experience in creating state-of-the-art educational facilities and looks forward to making these designs a reality for the young people of Poole."
The team is currently working towards a planning application and seeking the views of the local community on the design proposals. It is hoped that work will begin on site in July 2012 with completion expected in February 2014.
