Construction firm, Strategic Team Group, has secured a £3.6 million contract to complete the latest phase of works to improve Liverpool Central, the city's busiest underground station.
Part of the £5 million programme of works, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Merseytravel, Strategic Team Group is currently carrying out major redevelopment work to improve capacity, safety and access as well as enhancing passenger experience, more appropriate to the station's status as a major gateway to Liverpool.
Work under the contract, which is due for completion in October 2012, will see over 60 operators per day involved in the transformation which includes:
•Expansion and enclosure of the walkway to the passenger lift, making the area part of the station concourse
•Realignment of the automatic ticket gates, creating improved passenger flow in and out of the station
•Increased and improved passenger sanitation provision Construction of a new modular staff building to the rear of the station
•New concourse level, passenger waiting areas
•New cycle storage facilities
•Improved security, with additional CCTV, lighting and real time information provision
•New wall and ceiling finishes
Commenting on the contract, Strategic Team Group's business development director, Charles Tweed said: "We are thrilled to be working once again with Mersytravel on this major project to provide Liverpool with the 21st century underground station it deserves. Whilst we have a wealth of experience in the rail sector, Liverpool Central marks a significant milestone for Strategic Team Group, as it's the first underground station we have been awarded."
