Students Swap Classroom For Construction Site

Year 10 students at Oldfield School, Bath, swapped the classroom for the construction site to gain a close-up view of the housebuilding process organised by Lovell.

The students – who earlier this year took part in a housebuilding workshop run by Lovell at the school – built on the experience with a visit to Southlands, Weston, where the company is developing 74 homes. The properties are part of a £27 million scheme by Lovell to demolish pre-cast reinforced concrete homes in Bath and Keynsham and create 275 homes for rent and shared ownership for Somer Community Housing Trust.

The activities with Oldfield School, which is situated close to the Southlands site, were arranged by Lovell to help students find out more about the scheme and construction industry careers. During a supervised tour, the students saw homes at all stages of construction, from foundation level to completed properties.

"This was a fantastic opportunity for Oldfield students and one they are still talking about," said Nicola Turner, vocational coordinator for Oldfield School. "They were fully engaged when viewing the different stages and students are now able to use technical terms confidently."
