A renewable energy project in Eaglescliffe has been awarded £20,873 from EDF Energy.
The grant comes from the EDF Energy Green Fund and will help pay for an array of photovoltaic solar panels at Egglescliffe School in Urlay Nook Road.
The panels will be fitted to the roof of the school’s south-facing sports hall and are anticipated to reduce Egglescliffe’s carbon emissions by more than 10.2 tonnes per year.
Alan Richardson, Assistant Headteacher at Egglescliffe School, said: "We're delighted that the EDF Energy Green Fund is able to help make this exciting project a reality. We hope that the solar panels will not only reduce our energy bills and our carbon footprint but become an important educational tool, helping us to inform our students about the importance of sustainability."
All funding is now in place, with further contributions of £5,000 received from TATA Global Beverages, owner of Tetley Tea, which is manufactured in a local factory, and £1,000 from SABIC in Teeside. The installation is due to begin in the summer holidays with the project expected to be completed by September.
Egglescliffe is one of more than 15,500 schools that are part of The Pod, EDF Energy’s online programme for greener schools.
