Morgan Sindall has won a contract to redevelop part of the Westlands School in Torquay, Devon.
The project will see the existing library converted into four new classrooms and a smaller resource centre created in its place as the pupils increase their use of electronic resources and less book space is required. A number of additional improvements will also be made to facilities around the school.
The scheme will see the first modifications made to the secondary school, which serves 1,500 pupils, since it was rebuilt in 1999.
The school is currently in the top 10 per cent of schools in the country for student progress with 88 per cent of pupils achieving five GCSEs graded A* to C - the highest of any non-grammar school in South Devon.
Carl Heslop, area manager for Morgan Sindall, said: "Westlands School is an innovative place of learning and the redevelopment of the current library is fitting for the direction the school is heading.
"Less library space is required these days as electronic and digital resources are changing the way pupils access information. Morgan Sindall has a long track record of delivering projects in live schools and the team will be avoiding disruption by undertaking much of the work out of school hours."
