Communities Minister Andrew Stunell visited the iconic Byker Estate in Newcastle to see for himself how progress is being made to help secure its long-term future.
The Grade II listed Byker Estate, designed by Ralph Erskine, is internationally acclaimed as a prime example of 1970s social housing, but needs significant investment to be brought up to modern standards.
Mr Stunell met with resident members of Byker’s new Community Trust, which will soon take control of the estate’s continued restoration, to hear their plans for the homes they love. He also saw how the refurbishment of the estate’s long-term empty buildings is bringing more family homes into use.
In particular, Mr Stunell heard how Byker will benefit from the latest in green technology through the Government's Green Deal, making the iconic estate sustainable for the future and helping reduce energy bills for its residents. Mr Stunell said this was a shining example of what can be achieved not just in Byker, but across Newcastle and the surrounding area.
Speaking at the North East Economic Forum, the Minister argued that its rich heritage in manufacturing meant this part of the country was well placed to become a world leader in the ever-expanding green field. He said that for too long the area had been dependent on public sector jobs and that local investment such as the Regional Growth Fund would help expand private sector opportunities.
Mr Stunell said: "Just a year on since the Government green light for Byker’s community to take control of their neighbourhood, it’s clear local residents have not been sitting on their laurels. A bright future is already in sight for Byker and the plans I've heard today will help ensure that this iconic estate remains a place people are proud to call home.
"Having worked in architecture myself, I know the importance of making Byker fit for purpose while preserving its heritage. I’m confident the task is in safe hands. Generations of Byker residents to come can look forward to greener, cheaper to run homes that lose none of their community's current charm and spirit.
"And I want to see the rest of the North East follow where Byker leadsin their plans for the latest in green technology. This area’s rich manufacturing heritage could make it a world leader in the green industry and open new doors for local jobs and growth."
