The contract to install Peterborough's new war memorial has been awarded to John Lucas Ltd of Peterborough.
Work has started on site, with the war memorial due to be completed by Monday 23 April 2012. The stone is Ancaster white limestone from Stamford Stone Company Ltd.
The memorial, which will stand in Bridge Street close to the Town Hall, is based on the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. There will be steps leading up to the obelisk and on the memorial will be the words 'Lest We Forget'.
Councillor Irene Walsh, chairperson of the Peterborough War Memorial Committee, said: "The whole committee is delighted that we are embarking on the installation of the new memorial. In a matter of months Peterborough will have a prominent memorial in the centre of the city to honour all those people who have died fighting for our country.
"We must not forget that without the generosity of members of the public, school children, local businesses and everyone else who made a donation to the appeal, we would not be where we are today."
The city council is working with Peterborough Veterans' Association and the Royal British Legion to develop the project and secure funding for the new memorial.
