One of London's most iconic bridges is undergoing a programme of major lighting improvements in time for this year’s Olympic Games.

Westminster Council's lighting project on the twin Golden Jubilee Footbridges, which have illuminated the way for millions of visitors and workers crossing the Thames, received a coveted Street Design award in 2011 for the replacement lighting in the bridge balustrades.

The award is in recognition of the ongoing work to upgrade all the lighting on both footbridges by July 2012 and is part of the City Council's annual £7million citywide upgrade of highway infrastructure.

Cllr Ed Argar, cabinet member for city management, said: "We have already installed some new lighting on the bridge but we still need to complete the high level spot lights – which involves using abseiling workers to put in place.

"We are delighted to have received such a prestigious award – these improvements make the crossing safer and a more pleasant place for pedestrians, improving an already attractive part of London's night-time skyline."

The investment in the Golden Jubilee Bridges comes as part of a £7m package for the City of Westminster which includes investment in roads, pavements and infrastructure and and infrastructure and also improving street lighting on bridges and in underpasses and subways.
