The designers behind Surrey County Council's stunning new bridge across the River Thames were also involved in the creation of world famous landmarks including Dubai's luxurious Burj Al Arab seven-star hotel and Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
Atkins used their world-renowned expertise to design the new Walton Bridge, which will become the first road crossing to span the famous river in about 20 years.
Ian Lake, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "The new Walton bridge will be a landmark for generations of Surrey residents so we had to make sure it was right and we're delighted a local company came up with the right design. Good transport links are vital to Surrey's economy growth so by investing in projects like Walton Bridge we are investing in the county's future prosperity."
The £32.3 million bridge will link Walton and Shepperton, in Surrey, providing improved access to local businesses, major employers and shopping centres. Preliminary work is due to begin on 31 January that will include an archaeological survey and clearance of the site in preparation for construction by building firm Costain in early 2012. The bridge will be completed in 2013.
When selecting a designer for the project, Epsom-based Atkins' record impressed having designed Burj Al Arab, the world's first seven-star hotel and one of the tallest hotels in the world. The firm also worked on the 72,500-seat Millennium Stadium, in Cardiff, which, when completed, featured the world's largest fully retractable roof.
