Midas Construction has been awarded an £8 million contract to build student accommodation on behalf of University College Falmouth (UCF) and the University of Exeter (UoE) at Glasney Student Village at the Tremough Campus, Penryn.
The contract involves the construction of five additional blocks of accommodation comprising 224 rooms in total. Enabling works have now commenced with the new residences scheduled for occupation by the beginning of the 2012 academic year.
Midas has also recently been awarded a £7 million contract to build new education facilities catering for art, design, construction and automotive engineering students at Truro College.
Mike O'Neil, Midas Construction Executive Director in Devon and Cornwall, said: "Midas Construction has a proud record in Cornwall of building some of the finest educational facilities in the UK. We have built all the existing student residences on the Tremough site and this summer handed over phase II of the £29 million development of Penwith College in Penzance.
"I believe our success in winning these important contracts derives from proven experience of minimising the impact of construction work on daily life on campus and by consistently delivering industry leading customer services."
Niamh Lamond, CEO of the Tremough Campus Services Group, said: "This latest phase of development forms part of the institutions' strategy to ensure that there is sufficient high quality accommodation for students in the locality, in line with the growth of UCF and UoE.
"As we move into a new fees arena, our students will expect the highest of standards in everything that we deliver. The Tremough Campus Services Group is committed to providing students of UCF and UoE with world-class services and this major investment forms part of that approach."
