Birmingham City Council has won the overall prize at the UK Housing Awards for its Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust scheme, which delivers hundreds of affordable but high-quality new homes each year.

Established in January 2009, Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust has so far provided Birmingham council tenants with more than 150 brand new homes and secured dozens of apprenticeships for local young people in the construction industry.

The winners of the 2011 UK Housing Awards were announced by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and Inside Housing magazine at a ceremony presented by Michael Portillo at the Park Lane Hilton.

The UK Housing Awards, now in their fifteenth year, recognise excellence across 11 categories and present prizes for outstanding achievement in housing in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and for the UK as a whole.

CIH President Helen Collins said: "We were so impressed with the high calibre of the finalists in all of the categories this year, but special congratulations go to our winners, Birmingham City Council, who have demonstrated the amazing difference that building great quality, affordable homes can make to people and communities."
