Willmott Dixon Scoops £14m Surbiton Health & Education Facility

Construction News Image
Willmott Dixon took the amount of health sector work secured since July to over £100 million after being appointed for a £14.1 million contract to deliver a health centre and primary school.

The company's office in Cobham will build the combined facility in Surbiton under a LIFT arrangement for South West London Health Partnerships following collaboration between NHS Kingston and the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames.

Willmott Dixon will start major construction work this month at the former Surbiton Hospital site to create a community health facility comprising GP services from four local practices, urgent care centre ,diagnostics (blood tests, ultrasound and X-rays), minor operations, therapies and outpatients, plus a two-form entry school called Lime Tree Primary. A central facility shared by the two buildings will act as a community hub providing an information desk and access to facilities for the general public during certain hours.

Lime Tree Primary School will open in September 2012, offering 60 new reception places and 26 part-time nursery places, followed in early 2013 by the health centre.

The joint purpose facility is an innovative solution to the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames' need to increase primary school space by leasing land owned by NHS Kingston, which is using the funds to build its new health centre.

Low carbon features include the health centre achieving BREEAM Excellent, backed by a large PV array and car charging points, while the school will have a green roof. The two buildings will also share a combined energy centre to save on running costs, while the whole site is designed to encourage 'green travel' in line with GLA directives.

It is also the largest mixed-use regeneration scheme in the Borough and comes on the back of Willmott Dixon’s five existing primary school projects being delivered for Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames under the Primary Expansion Programme. This enables the company to drive economies of scale with combined supply chain purchasing across other projects in the Borough.

Willmott Dixon's Cobham office is responsible for the company's work in South London and Southern Home Counties office, covering Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and Sussex. It recently built the new 50 metre training pool and sporting excellence complex at the University of Surrey and is redeveloping Coulsdon College and The Oasis Academy in Croydon, plus the new G-Live concert and entertainment venue in Guildford.
