Mayor Calls For Views To Continue Rebuilding East London

Construction News Image
With less than a month to go until consultation closes, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson has urged people to have their say on his vision to rebuild and regenerate east London.

After decades of underinvestment, the Mayor estimates that the 2012 legacy reward has the potential to deliver up to 30,000 new homes, thousands of new jobs and brand new communities after next summer's Games. As a result of the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park hundreds of hectares of land, much of it contaminated, have been reclaimed and major new infrastructure have been built, including new transport links, sporting and community facilities. The area has also seen the creation of new green spaces and reclaimed waterways.

The Mayor's vision for the area is set out in new planning guidance, published last month, which sets the scene for the continuing regeneration of the Olympic Park and Lea Valley, identifying the land available for the new homes and the estimated 1.35 million square metres of commercial space that could be created, as well as the social infrastructure and other planning considerations required to deliver it.

Mr Johnson said: "This brand new district of our great city, emerging on the back of the 2012 Games, must reflect its energy, its diversity and its noise. It should be built to inspire and to the highest standards of design and sustainability and be a place where people choose to live, visit and enjoy.

"I want to work closely with all those who can help deliver this vision, including the private sector, the host boroughs, existing communities, the Olympic Park Legacy Company and landowners. The initial feedback we are seeking through this consultation will be key to delivering this vision in the coming decades."
