New Era For Viacom International Media Networks UK

The headquarters of Viacom International Media Networks UK (VIMN UK) are being given a multi-million makeover in a project which will see Morgan Sindall transform the MTV Studios site in Camden Lock, North London.

The construction company has been awarded the contract by VIMN UK to create studios and some 35,000 sq ft of new and refurbished office space.

The project has been designed by London architects Jacobs Webber and also features a colourful briese soleil solar shading system, plus a green wall which was created with specialist input from Kew Gardens. A remodelled atrium with enhanced use of glazing and skylights will complete the new look building.

The project is due to be finished by December 2012 and involves the decommissioning of two of the four existing studios, which have hosted major artists from around the world. The remaining two studios will continue as usual.

The canal-side complex has a unique place in Britain’s cultural landscape, regarded as one of Britain’s finest examples of post-modern architecture. It was designed by award winning architect Sir Terry Farrell who, in 1981, oversaw the conversion of a 93,418 sq ft garage into the headquarters of TV-am, Britain’s first commercial breakfast TV station. VIMN UK (then known as MTV Europe) took over the building in 1993.

Peter Jacobs, construction managing director of Morgan Sindall, commented: "We welcome the opportunity to use our skills and capabilities at one of the best known buildings in North London. It’s a pleasure to work with the project team and a client that is a true giant in global entertainment. This appointment affirms Morgan Sindall’s continued strong performance in the capital."

Pat Adams, leading for project manager ARCADIS, said: "We're delighted to be working with VIMN UK and the project team on this exciting media hub. The challenging requirement to keep the offices fully operational throughout the fit out makes this a complex and interesting project, with which to be involved."
