North Yorkshire County Council has awarded the contract for maintenance of the county's highways network to Ringway Infrastructure Services Limited (Ringway).

The contract will cover all aspects of:

•highway maintenance

•highway improvement

•gully emptying

•grass cutting

•bridge repair and maintenance

•street lighting maintenance

•maintenance of the County Council vehicle fleet

The contract, which will start on 1 April 2012, will run for a maximum of ten years and is worth in the region of £25 million a year.

Ringway will take over from Balfour Beatty WorkPlace, which has held the contract since 2002. It is anticipated that the majority of the staff working on the contract for Balfour Beatty WorkPlace will transfer to the new contractor. North Yorkshire County Council will work closely with Ringway and Balfour Beatty WorkPlace to ensure a smooth transition.

Ringway is part of the Eurovia group and one of the largest providers of highway services in the country.

County Councillor Gareth Dadd, executive member for highways, said: "The tender assessment has been thorough and the contract has been awarded to the company which submitted the best bid both in terms of price and quality. It will provide excellent value for money for the residents of North Yorkshire."
