Green Light For Inland Port In Doncaster

Doncaster Council and Helioslough has announced that planning permission has been granted for an Inland Port at Rossington, Doncaster.

The proposal will see a rail freight terminal built served by rail and road, 562,000m2 of warehouses, over 100 hectares of ecological enhancements and a road link to J3 of the M18 that provides the first stage of the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS).

The development is expected to employ over 5,500 workers and will make a major contribution to national and local policy for promoting sustainable distribution by diverting a substantial amount of freight traffic from road to rail. This will result in a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, together with reduced traffic levels and congestion on motorways and other major roads.

The whole planning application process was undertaken in less than a year through a good working relationship between the council and the applicant and the use of a Planning Performance Agreement. This ensured that a well managed administrative process was in place enabling other statutory bodies such as the Environment Agency and the Highways Agency to respond to the application within tight deadlines.

Helioslough is now in discussions with the council about the phased implementation of the scheme and is working with the council on an early delivery of FARRRS. This new link road from Junction 3 of the M18 to Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport received support from the Government's Regional Growth Fund earlier this year and will serve the Inland Port development.
