Wales Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions

New figures out today show that Wales' total greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 23.3% compared to the base year (1990/1995).

The figures also show that greenhouse gas emissions in Wales fell from 49.5 MtCO2 in 2008 to 42.6 MtCO2 in 2009, indicating an ongoing, year on year decline.

In a UK wide context the figures show that Wales produced 7.6% of the UK's total net greenhouse gas emissions in 2009, with England producing 77.6%, Scotland producing 8.6% and Northern Ireland producing 3.5%.

The figures also provide a breakdown for specific greenhouse gases and show that levels of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafloride have all reduced by between 79.5% and 19.3% since the base year (1990/1995).

Speaking about the new figures, Environment Minister, John Griffiths: "These figures show that greenhouse gas emissions in 2009 fell significantly. The last 20 years have seen dramatic changes in how we live and treat our environment, so this is welcome news.

"However at the same time, we recognise that the UK economic downturn was the major factor in driving down emissions during this period – so there is certainly no room for complacency.

"Looking ahead, we must maintain and look to enhance our efforts to reduce emissions in Wales and everyone has a role to play here. Last year we launched Wales’ Climate Change strategy which sets out exactly how Wales will deliver on its ambition of a 3% year on year reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

"The strategy includes detailed delivery plans that show the areas in which the Welsh Government will take action, both to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to help Wales adapt and become resilient to its changing climate.

"The strategy demonstrates the Welsh Government's commitment to showing leadership on tackling climate change, but highlights that people, communities and businesses across Wales need to take action to drive down emissions even further. It is this joint working approach that will help us to meet our ambitious targets."
