Derby City Council's £35 million project to refurbish and rebuild its Council House is under-way as it has appointed BAM Construction in the Midlands to deliver the new facilities, which are being project managed for the Council by Mace.
During the last few months the building has been subject to a strip out and demolition in preparation for the construction phase of the project.
Construction will see a bespoke One Stop Shop, new office space, a council chamber and members' accommodation. The building is set to be transformed into an A rated BREEAM excellent office environment.
The River Derwent will be harnessed to bring electricity into the building. Many sustainable features will be introduced and convert the building into an A-rated environment. The newly-created Council building will be more energy efficient and will the building’s capacity will rise from 500 to 1900 people.
Steve Roome, who delivered Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, chosen as Prime Minister's Best Public Building, will oversee the project which will be managed by Jay Roberts who recently delivered an outstanding environmental office project for BAM in Solihull.
For BAM, Director Richard Dakin said: "This will be a striking looking new and refurbished building for the Council. BAM's considerate style of building is well known across the UK and we’ll bring that together with a first rate team to deliver this major project for the City."
BAM was recently rated both as one of the 'UK's Best Green Companies' and 'Best Companies to Work For'. Its international parent helped build two of the most recent FIFA World Cup Final Stadiums.
Following strict evaluation of the Council’s property portfolio, the refurbishment was considered the best option for providing excellent office accommodation and bringing their facilities under one roof.
